Garnet are a group of silicate minerals that have been used since the Bronze Age as gemstones and abrasives. It’s 6.5-7.5 on the Mohs hardness scale. The name is thought to derive from the pomegranate since the red variety of garnet resembles the seeds of the fruit. Garnets come in a variety of species and colours - rhodolite (fuschia), tsavorite (green), spessartine (orange), pyrope (red) to name a few. Garnets are found all over the world. They were used in Egypt more than 5000 years ago, in Sumeria around 2100 BC and in Europe during the middle ages to enhance truth, faith and constancy and to dispel melancholy. It represents primordial fire, the creation of the world out of chaos, purification and love.
